As you wander through the Kamuzu International Airport (KIA) in Lilongwe, Malawi, you may expect to see the usual rows of cold, sterile steel chairs that fill many airport lounges. However, this time, something catches your eye. Amidst the sea of metal, a burst of vibrant colours breaks the monotony. Clusters of handwoven cane chairs, lovingly known as the Malawi Chair, are arranged against the far end of the departure lounge. Painted in delicate pastel hues of blue, yellow, white, and black, these chairs are accompanied by bursts of greenery from plant fixtures and beautifully woven baskets and tables. Intricate artworks adorn the surrounding columns, completing the immersive feel of a temporary slice of African home away from home. It is a breathtaking sight, and a sign standing nearby offers a warm welcome: "Welcome to the Lirangwe Lounge, Enjoy".
The inspiration behind the "Lirangwe Lounge" begins in the village of Lirangwe, approximately 50 kilometers outside of Blantyre, where a cooperative of weavers resides. This cooperative, known as the Namgoneka COMSIP Cooperative, is one of the most significant contributors to the weaving craft in Malawi. Weaving itself holds a rich history in the community, passed down from generation to generation. It has become an intrinsic part of their identity. Among their many creations, the Malawi Chair stands as a classic wooden seat with a centuries-old history, crafted using blue gum tree vines and nsungwi. This traditional gem, cherished and handed down through the ages, has become the cooperative's hallmark.
The Lirangwe Lounge at KIA serves as a celebration of this inspiring community and the magnificent work they create. It also acts as an opportunity to market their products, showcasing how they can uplift private and public spaces with innovation and creativity. Visitors, both Malawians and foreigners alike, are welcomed to immerse themselves in the craftmanship of these weavers, experiencing the beauty and comfort their products offer.
The concept for the Lirangwe Lounge was born through the vision of philanthropist Henry Mphwanthe and brought to life by the talented design team at KETASE.
